Last weekend, I was babysitting for my little cousins who live in the city. One of my cousins is a first grader and his mom shared with me how his teacher recognizes students for various positive actions within the classroom. I have always believed strongly in positive reinforcement and how every child should be recognized for their success. I have never been a fan of students publicly being shamed for making mistakes or negative behaviors. That's why I love this idea that was shared with me and I knew I had to bring it to our classroom room right away! The way positive pockets work, is that each student has a "pocket" on their desk. Throughout they are able to receive different colored popsicles sticks to fill their pocket with as they accomplish something in our classroom that I believe they should be recognized for. Here are the different colored popsicle sticks and what they mean. These posters are hung in our classroom! At the end of the week the students will fill out a reflection sheet where they will fill in/color the different sticks they earned throughout the week. They will bring this home to share with you! I encourage you to sit with your child and discuss their sticks for the week as this will be a great opportunity for your child to share their success in our classroom.
Today your child came home with their first scholastic book order form. Book orders are a great way to find cheap and enjoyable books. Encouraging your child to read at home will show them the importance of reading and help them grow as readers! If you are interested in ordering, visit: scholastic and sign up your child. Our class code is, TQ676. Let me know if you have any questions.
Today our new LMC teacher, Mrs. Kovacic, introduced the students to TumbleBooks. TumbleBooks is a wonderful online resource that provides animated ebooks to kids. You can find hundreds of books, that you can have your child listen to and follow along with to help improve their reading skills! Today your child came home with a purple folder. This is their poetry folder. Every Friday your student will come home with a new poem that is to be practiced together and returned the following Monday. This weeks poem is called "Tim Tam". The phonics skill associated with this poem is the short a sound. On the back of the poem you will find a list of other words in the -an family. Practice the poem with your child to build up their reading fluency! :) |
